Miss TT withdrawn from Miss Universe

by Joan Rampersad Tuesday,
June 23 2009WITH

39 days away from the 2009 Miss Universe competition on August 23, at Atlantis Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas, there is no word on a possible representative from TT.Peter Elias, former franchise holder for the local leg of the international pageant, resigned in December 2008, saying it was too expensive to produce the show with little help from the Government and corporate sponsors. Newsday learnt that Culture Minister Marlene Mc Donald met Elias, in April, and was told that he will assist if called upon. This country’s participation at the Miss World 2009 competition, also appears doubtful. Efforts to reach Mc Donald yesterday were futile as Newsday was told that she was out of the office. Listed withdrawals for the 2009 competition include Ghana, Jamaica, Sri Lanka and Trinidad & Tobago.
At the recently held Fifth Summit of the Americas, Prime Minister Patrick Manning boasted about this country’s efforts at the international beauty pageants.

Miss Universe expert comments on Vo Hoang Yen
17:22' 24/06/2009
Bridge – Charmed by the Vietnamese entrant in this year’s Miss Universe Vo Hoang Yen’s moves on the catwalk, pageant expert Nina Cleopatra affirmed on missosology.org that Hoang Yen will be the most brilliant Asian contestant. However, she said that Hoang Yen’s face is not “beautiful” or “stunning”.
Vo Hoang Yen currently leads the poll voting for the most favourite contestant of Miss Universe 2009 on Missosology, a website on pageants. She is also among the top entrants of Miss Universe 2009 on Global Beauties website.
My primary recommendation for Hoang Yen has to be to guard her claws a little bit while in the Bahamas and then boom at the prelims. Remember there's gonna be plenty of copy cats out there looking for techniques and to complete their lists of do's and don’ts before the pageant and Vietnam is going to be one of the girls to look for in terms of catwalk skills, so she has to be a little bit cautious not to give too many demonstrations out there.
Overall she needs some fresh light make up, youthful looking hairstyle, bubbly attitude and a beautiful flying gown that allows Hoang Yen to develop herself on stage and presto one of strongest contestants from Asia by far if not the strongest. Vietnam this year represents a double threat. Hoang Yen has potential to catapult Vietnam as one of the future powerhouse of beauty from Asia. Remember, it is all about momentum and skill. Good luck Vietnam!

Katie Taylor is a project manager in the property division of insurance group IAG, and she is managing the relocation of staff to the new NZI building in central Auckland. The 24-year-old is more than happy with the juxtaposition of her professional role and that of a beauty queen.
In August she will head to the Bahamas to vie for the international title of Miss Universe, a project of multi-millionaire Donald Trump who she is looking forward to meeting, along with young women representing 80 countries. “I would love to be Miss Universe,” she says. “I would get to travel the world for a year, helping charities and experiencing other cultures. It will be amazing and I am going to try my best.”

*Claudia Jordan of "Celebrity Apprentice" and "Deal or No Deal" has been tapped as a co-host of the upcoming 2009 Miss Universe Pageant, which will air live on NBC on Sunday, August 23 at 9 p.m. ET from Atlantis, Paradise Island in the Bahamas.
Paula M. Shugart, Presidentof the Miss Universe Organization, announced Tuesday that Jordan and "Access Hollywood" co-anchor Billy Bush will emcee the event to choose a successor for 2008 winner Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela. During her reign, she has traveled the globe as an advocate for HIV/AIDS education, research, and legislation. The newly crowned Miss Universe will go on to do the same.
Each contestant from more than 80 countries around the world will be judged in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview as they vie for the coveted title of Miss Universe 2009. In recent years, worldwide distribution of the popular competition has topped more than 180 countries.
Model, actress and former Miss Rhode Island USA, Claudia Jordan's first big break came as one of "Barker's Beauties" on CBS's "The Price is Right." She then went on to co-host the TV show "Livin' Large" with Carmen Electra and worked as a correspondent for "Best Damn Sports Show Period."

Miss Universe is an annual international beauty contest run by the Miss Universe Organization.

The contest was founded in 1952 by California clothing company Pacific Mills. The pageant became part of Kayser-Roth and then Gulf and Western Industries, before being acquired by Donald Trump in 1996.

Alongside with its rival Miss World and Miss Earth contests, this pageant is one of the most publicized beauty contests in the world. The current Miss Universe is Dayana Mendoza, from Venezuela.

Miss Universe 2009, the 58th Miss Universe beauty pageant, will be held at the Atlantis Paradise Island, in Nassau, Bahamas on August 23, 2009. Dayana Mendoza, from Venezuela, winner of Miss Universe 2008, will crown her successor in the event.
